Earlier, I used to mess up my XP installation everyday and had to install it and then install the drivers and then the softwares, which easily took more than 1 and a half hours. If you don't have any method to run DriveImage on its own without starting XP, it can very well happen that your XP installation may become corrupt, and even though you have an image on another partition, you won't be able to access it since the computer won't start.Īll this might take some time, but once you do it, it will save a lot of time afterwards. You'll need the DriveImage plugin for BartPE, but its all free so it shouldn't matter. There's one more thing you need, its called BartPE with this, if your Windows won't load, you can boot it from a CD, and then reinstall the image. But of course, all user data is lost on that particular partition, so always keep it in some other place. So in fifteen minutes, you can get a fully working copy of XP, with all drivers and softwares installed. An image can be copied in something like fifteen minutes. You don't need to install XP again, just the image, and it is a fast process: just installing XP takes about an hour, after which you have install drivers and keep rebooting the computer, and then install the softwares. Then whenever you feel that the computer has slowed down, all you have to do is reinstall the image. The image size of my 10 GB XP partition is about 1.4 GBs. Once you have installed XP and all the drivers, and maybe some necessary softwares, make an image of that partition, and save it somewhere else. There are many softwares for this, there's a free one that I use, called DriveImageXML, I think its the best for our requirements. After this, you have to make an image of the partition. Or you could skip this step, and format the partition and install XP. If you don't know much about this, then first get the software \"Nlite\" which can help you make your own XP (by removing certain services and stuff, and adding other important things). What you need to do is make an image of a fresh installation and reinstall that image every month or so. Problem is, whatever you do, it will end up slowing the system after some time has passed. ![]() Turn Off Unnecessary Windows XP Services | Īnd in msconfig, you will find a services tab, under which you can find out which 3rd party software services other than the Microsoft ones are running.ĭefragmenting the hard disk is also important, it does improve performance as well as the life of the HD get a good defragmenter if you are interested in this, like Perfect Disk by Raxco (there could be others).Īnd get SP 3 if you haven't I noticed a lot of improvement after switching to the new service pack. Search on google for which services to disable here's a page that might help: If you haven't changed the default settings, then Windows would be starting a whole lot of things that you don't really need, like Error Reporting Service and all. One thing you need to do is check up all the startup entries: go to Start > Run and type msconfig then in the startup section, disable all the softwares that you do not need to start every time the computer starts (like winamp agent and nero and such stuff).Īnother thing that most people don't care about are the services that are running on their computer. Many people have already suggested CCleaner, but that will only clean the temporary files and all. There are quite a few things you could do.
